Piet Cornelis Mondrian

Dutch  •  Abstract Expressionism  •  1872 − 1944

When Pieter Cornelis Mondrian Jr. was born in The Netherlands last March 7, 1872, he was expected to become a school teacher. His father was one and wanted his son to share the profession. Piet Mondrian produced the teaching diploma to please his father, but still pursued education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam to follow his passion. read more

Mondrian was able to pick up some styles based on his schooling at the Academy. His initial techniques were still-life paintings and landscapes. He was shaping up to be an impressionist, until an exhibit from Braque and Picasso introduced the budding artist to the world of cubism. The style basically consisted of geometric shapes, mathematical symmetry and abstract strokes. The two artists were the founders of cubism, and they inspired Mondrian to experiment with cubism and symbolism styles. Enjoying this new approach to art, he moved to Paris ? the center of visual art and aspiring artists. During his time in Paris, Mondrian became famous worldwide for his exhibitions at Berlin and Paris. To support himself, Mondrian would copy works of art from museums and sell his reproductions. Gradually, he developed his own style of abstract art, cubism and symbolism. It was his very own technique that was later on classified as Neo-Plasticism. His paintings were clean and simple. A good example is the famous ?Composition with Yellow, Blue and Red? (1937-1942), which look like black lines on white canvas and some squares with colors. There are no shadows or living elements, there is no light or scaling, and there is definitely no deeper meaning beneath the straight lines, clear-cut shapes and solid colors. It is, in a word, art. The style of Neo-Plasticism developed into a movement that involved Bart van der Leck, Theo van Doesburg, and Georges Vantongerloo. The principles of this technique exceeded the realm of ink on canvas and extended well into graphic designs, industrial structures, architectural creations and even sculptures. Mondrian was always going back and forth from Paris and his hometown, but he finally had to leave for good when the German invasion began to surface. Hitler himself encountered the artist?s work, and he referred to it as degenerate art. Mondrian went to London and met other artists who later on became dear friends. As the German invasion escalated, the artist left the United Kingdom altogether and fled to New York at 1940. He may have been on the run, but his career was on the rise. Mondrian continued to create works of art in New York, such as "Broadway Boogie-Woogie" and "Victory Boogie-Woogie". After spending 5 years in the Big Apple, Mondrian died at the age of 71 because of pneumonia.
