Michelangelo?s works reflected his devotion to the Catholic Church, his subjects including Adam and Eve, Noah, Solomon, David and Goliath, as well as stories of Creation and other biblical passages. He constantly found himself torn between the Vatican in Rome, the urges of influential families like the Medici clan, the completely opposite styles of his rivals, as well as the expression of his own artistic desires. Michelangelo?s personal life and struggles prove to be just as interesting as his works of art. Michelangelo?s childhood was an unhappy one. His mother died when he was only six years old, leaving his unaffectionate father to raise him. This early tragedy in his life caused the artist to bear an inability to trust others around him, and he preferred to be by himself most of the time. His intelligence however, was not lost on his father, who quickly sent him to grammar school to make him an ?educated man of society.? It was in grammar school that Michelangelo discovered art. When he was 13 years of age, the young artist received an apprenticeship for painter Domenico Ghirlandario. As he got older, he spent more time studying different methods to hone his technique. For two years, Michelangelo devoted his time examining rotting corpses in order to learn every inch of the human body and its anatomy. This practice was highly forbidden by the Catholic Church at that time, but the artist?s bold efforts paid off as it was this knowledge that gave him the strong foundation he needed to create the world-renowned sculptures and paintings of bare subjects. Michelangelo?s personality was reflective of the artistic genius that resided within. He was arrogant about his work, and always difficult to himself ? a perfectionist to the superlative degree. His very soul would experience torture with each passing day that a work of art went uncompleted. He was so immersed in his painting for the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel that he would raise every document that passed through his hands and view them from the top, as his vision has grown used to the upward angle. He regarded each piece of rock as a living thing with a sculpture waiting to come out, as opposed to a piece of rubble to be shaped into life. During his death, Michelangelo was treated like a holy being, with hoards of people from Florence and Rome coming to visit the sarcophagus of this divine artist.
