He only stumbled upon this field when he was 13 years of age, coming across a schoolmate drawing images on a piece of paper. Fascinated, he started to frequent the school library, examining book after book filled with pictures and copying them during his spare time. Watching how images come to life with strokes of a pen on paper, he was spellbound. This was the birth of one of the greatest artists the world has ever known. Born into a humble Jewish family of eleven, Chagall’s childhood was not luxurious but it was a happy one. His parents toiled to support the family, and his grandparents made sure all nine children were instilled with the right values of love and faith. Despite the heavy discrimination against Jews at that time, Chagall’s mother made sure her children were able to receive good education. It was in primary school that the artist’s eyes were opened to the world of art. He received formal training for the arts at Paris and developed his own unique style as a painter. Chagall enjoyed playing with fantasy and reality, using his life memories and integrating them with his dreams and visions, eventually being able to conjure an enchanting work of art. A look at his paintings and one can see the darkness behind each splash of color, as well as other emotional contrasts brought by each painting. There is a hint of fantasy and magic, but these are tamed by the underlying gloom and shadows of each masterpiece. It is this unique ability to allow so many sensations to translate into canvass that catapulted Chagall to artistic fame. Chagall spent his life going back and forth between France and Russia, honing his skills and creating more works of art for the world to admire. His was a time of turmoil, with the first World War, revolutionary outbreaks, the Nazi regime and other discriminating forces that placed the world in a chaotic state. Perhaps these tragedies involuntarily contributed to the impact of his paintings – or perhaps, he is a truly great artist to have created such magic despite the disorder around him.
