Jackson Pollock was the first American artist to who was well received in Europe. His abstract style earned him the respect of artists and art lovers around the world, and his life was so interesting that it was made into a movie played by Ed Harris. read more

The youngest of five sons, Pollock was attending Manual Arts High School in LA when words of encouragement led him to seek formal training in the arts. He joined his brother Charles at the Art Students League in New York, where he started to pose for mural of other art classes, including one attended by Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siquieros. Pollock observed their experimental styles and magnified scales, which influenced the artist for the duration of his career. In New York, Pollock was able to meet a wealthy heiress named Peggy Guggenheim, of the Guggenheim Museum fame. She was an avid fan of Pollock, and helped him gain popularity and build a lasting audience. In the year 1943, he was given his own show, together with a contract that gave him a promised sum of 150 dollars per month for one year. Two years later, she loaned him some money to make a deposit on a home he wished to purchase, where he planned to stay with his wife Lee Krasner. Today, the house stands as the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center. It was in his home where he created large scale abstract works, as inspired by Orozco and Siquieros. Reactions were conflicting as he was both praised and ignored. Despite mixed reviews, these exhibits were able to catapult his name to fame, from New York to the rest of the world. In August 1949, Life magazine wrote a special article about him. Two years later, his technique was slightly altered – Pollock minimized the use of color, and used mostly black ink on unprimed canvases to create his paintings. This was not taken seriously by his supporters, and within the next five years he continued a downward spiral, struggling with alcoholism, infidelity and changes in his art. His marriage was on the rocks, and his art was growing less and less popular. He returned to using colors after one to two years, but during his last year there were no recorded paintings from Pollock.
