In time, the world grew to accept his paintings as some of the most important works of art to ever come from Vienna. Klimt was born in Austria to a father who ran his own gold-engraving business. Because it was unsuccessful, the family lived poorly. However, Klimt?s talents allowed him to study at a Vienna Art School and have first honors at school. In his early twenties, Klimt was commissioned to work on mural decors for some staircases at the Burgtheater and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. It was well received, and soon bigger orders kept the artist busy. Klimt?s signature style revolved around gold paint, spirals and swirls, theoretical space, phallic shapes, sexual symbolism and the sensuality of a woman?s body. Some of his best works include Philosophy, Judith and The Kiss. His works grew more controversial and caused him to lose a lot of commissioned public requests. Klimt began to take his craft as an artist more seriously, developing his own style and relishing the freedom of not being a hired artist. Klimt loved using the dominant woman or femme fatale as his subjects. Another noteworthy aspect of Klimt?s career was that his paintings have sold for some of the highest prices recorded for individual works of art. Klimt died from a stroke and pneumonia at the age of 55. Upon his death, his paintings were sold to the highest bidders. In the year 2003, Klimt?s Landhaus am Attersee was bought by an enthusiast for over 29 million US dollars ? and this was just a low start. In 2006, Adele Block-Bauer I was purchased for a gallery in New York for 135 million US dollars.
