Frida Kahlo

Mexican   •  Surrealism   •  1907 − 1954

Mexican painter Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón is remembered very well for creating remarkable and sometimes scandalous paintings that revealed the tumultuous life she lead. Frida Kahlo had three sisters. read more

Her father was half Hungarian and half Jewish, while her mother had Spanish, Mexican and Indian ancestries. Although famous for being a painter now, Frida had no intentions or plans of becoming an artist. After surviving the dreaded disease polio at the age of fifteen, she joined the pre-med course of a school in Mexico. She was on her way to becoming a doctor when, after only three years of training, Frida suffered serious injuries from a bus accident. She spent a year of her life bedridden and fighting to recover from her injuries: fractured backbones, collarbones and ribs, a shattered pelvis and shoulder, as well as other minor wounds. This accident brought pain and suffering to Frida for the rest of her life. In a strange twist of fate, Kahlo developed her skills in oil painting during her period of recovery. Her images consisted mainly of self-portraits and still life portraits. Because whatever painting proficiency she possessed was self-taught, she intentionally made her works appear inexperienced and raw. She painted from the heart, with flamboyant shades and flat figures. One of her inspirations was her love for Mexican folk art. Frida got married when she was 22 years old to the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, whose views on politics and art complemented her own. Even though he was a good two decades older than her, Frida fell in love and they were united in marriage. This fiery, obsessive relationship full of passion, love and hate conquered affairs, the stress from Rivera's career, a divorce and remarriage, and Frida's weak body, which never fully recovered from the bus accident. Frida died at the age of 47, having reached incredible success as an artist since her first solo exhibit at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York City in 1938. From the 1980’s up to present time, she continues to gain popularity, with films, plays, fashion lines, calendars and accessories taking inspiration from this artist.
