Fernando Botero

Colombian  •  Baroque   •  1932 −

Fernando Botero was born in Medellín, Colombia and raised by conservative, religious parents. He went to a Jesuit school for matadors during his early years. Even at a young age though, Botero knew that his passion lay in the world of art. read more

It was through paintings that he was able to express himself most eloquently. Botero was a big fan of bullfights, and this sport was the central subject of his initial artworks. In the year 1948, Botero had his paintings shown to the public eye. He was only 16 years old then. Two years after the exhibition, he found himself opening his first solo show in Bogotá. Nobody was more surprised than Botero when every single one of his exhibited paintings sold that day. Botero was inspired by the murals created by the Mexican artist Diego Rivero, whose works of art bore dark, political undertones of the issues faced by the people at that time. Eventually, Botero received formal lessons in painting at Madrid, his education funded by the replicas he created of famous paintings in the Prado Museum and sold to the tourists who came to visit. Among his favorites were artists Francisco de Goya and Diego Velázquez. He spent the 1950’s studying masterpieces from France and Spain, and within this decade he was able to develop his own technique of proportion and size. With sharp outlines and inflated shapes, Botero’s paintings appeared flat and smooth with no texture or shadows. However, because of the shades he used, they appeared to be bursting with life. His paintings incorporate bright, lively, colorful tones that speak volumes of the more abundant world that is Botero’s imagination. With a corpulent portrayal of human beings and animal shapes, each creation brings with it an inflated sense of life, this magnificence made tangible on canvas. At the same time, his paintings possessed political undertones that insinuated his subjects having an inflated sense of self-worth or self-importance. His 1967 painting called Presidential Family is a prime example of this. Other satirical works include The General (1996), Delfina (1978) and Guerillas (1986). The satire was not lost on the public eye, but because of each painting’s vivacity, these strong political views were regarded with amusement rather than resent. Botero was also able to develop a more gentle style of painting with his nudes and bordello scenes later on. These paintings were more comic than sexual, and they reflected soft, endearing qualities in each stroke. During the 1970’s, Botero started to deviate from paintings and started to hone his skills with sculpting bronze figures. He resumed painting in the 1980’s and focused on the creation of striking bullfight scenes such as Banderillas (1987). At present, Botero is still creating paintings and living in New York, Paris and Colombia with his second wife Cecilia Zambrano.
