It is assumed that he lived a comfortable life with parents who could afford to raise so many children. In addition to this, Durer?s godfather was the most successful publisher in all of Germany. Anton Koberger owned no less than 24 printing presses around the country, and the young Durer worked on the woodcut illustrations for some of the publications, helping his godfather to reach success. During his gap year, Durer continued to enrich his familiarity with the arts. He was fortunate enough to work with plenty of renowned artists. This experience allowed him to expand his knowledge in the field of watercolor techniques while developing his own methods of creating art. In the year 1943, Durer sketched his first self-portrait and impressed critics from the entire country. At present, this sketch is sitting in the Louvre, impressing thousands of tourists from all over the world. A year later, Durer went to Venice, Italy to gain more insights on his craft. He was able to work under the guidance of Giovanni Bellini, whom he considered to be the greatest artist in all of Italy. Durer was able to make significant connections in Venice in the short time he was there. This boosted his career greatly. In Italy, he became popular as the first artist to make pure landscape studies in the West. With a deeper understanding of woodcutting, watercolors and landscape portraits, Durer went back to his roots at Nuremberg in 1945 to open his very own workshop. Durer?s scientific approach to painting is something worth noting. He studied mathematics, the human anatomy, perspective, and ideal proportions earnestly in order to make his works most pleasing to the eye. This technique can be seen in his paintings, whose themes revolve around two major subjects: landscapes and people, both possessing religious undertones. His famous landscape paintings include View of Trento, the Adoration of the Trinity and Saint Johns Church. One can see the balance of elements in each painting, as well as the correct proportion for spectators to take in. He enjoyed painting famous people from the Catholic Bible, as one can see in his 16-part Apocalypse series and the 7-part Great Passion series. These were composed of the Lamentations of Christ and other significant moments in the history of Catholic faith.
